10+ Ways To Wear Your Scarves / Fall Scarf Tying Tutorial

October 19, 2018

Football season, legging season, pumpkin everything season, vest season, the third season, apple cider + bourbon season, and finally scarf season! If you’re anything like me, you have a closet full of scarves, and absolutely zero clue how to wear 90% of them. If it’s a set-it and forget-it type scarf, with no twisting, looping, or tugging involved, I’ll wear that thing all year long! Up until today, if it was any other type of scarf, it continued to hang in my closet looking cute as can be next to my fall clothes.

But we don’t want our scarves to just hang there looking cute for no one! Fall is the perfect time to stock up on different styles of scarves, or different colors and patterns than you already have! Especially when Macy’s is having a Customer Appreciation Sale [now through 10/21], where we can stock up for less! During the sale, use code THANKS for 25% off your order, AND free shipping at $49. Don’t forget one of my favorite Macy’s secrets- add a beauty item and your whole order will ship for free!

P.S. Not too long ago, we asked you guys [The LIY Tribe!] on Facebook if scarves were out or if they were here to stay, and most of you said scarves are in again this year! So now that you know scarves are here to stay and you’re heading over to Macy’s to add a few new scarves to your collection, we need to make sure we’re confident in how to wear them! So today I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned about four different styles of scarves. How to tie them, what to wear them with, when to wear them and more!

  1. The Blanket Scarf

Calvin Klein Striped Blanket Scarf

This is often the most complicated and confusing scarf to wear, however, when mastered it is also the coziest and warmest to have wrapped around your neck. There are so many ways that you can style a blanket scarf which also makes it the most versatile style of scarf to add to your wardrobe. If you have a blanket scarf in your closet [or if you don’t and are in need of one stat – here are many to choose from! I’m wearing this cutie] here are several ways to tie that sucker up!

  1. The classic wrap around your neck

By simply doing a wrap around your neck and letting the two sides hang, this is the easiest and most classic way to wear a scarf!

2. Turn it into an infinity scarf That’s right – you can turn a blanket scarf into an infinity scarf! All it takes is from the original position [in the classic wrap around your next style shown above] are two tucks of each side up into the neck area! Easy as one, two, tuck!

3. Wear it as a shawl This requires absolutely no guesswork on how to wear, but a quick toss around your shoulders and you are good to go! The benefit to blanket scarves is that they are so large, you can keep your entire torso warm with one of these!

4. The classic pull through  By folding the scarf in half lengthwise, you can then drape the scarf around your neck and then pull through. For a step by step tutorial, see here.

5. The fancy pull through You start with the classic position where you have a loop around your neck with the two loose ends on either side. Then you take each end and loop it through the circle that is around your neck. Voila, the fancy pull through is born!

2. The square scarfI.n.c. Mod Dot Floral Square Scarf, Created for Macy’s

The square scarf can be another tricky scarf to know how to style, typically caused by all of the fabric that there is. When you open up a square scarf it is quickly intimidating to know what to do with it. Today, I’m here to help. Here are a few ways to style your square scarf to keep it looking polished and presentable!

  1. Basic Blanket Tie

By taking your giant square and folding it diagonally from one end to the other [make a triangle] you then loop it around your neck, let both sides hang and you’ve got yourself a square scarf around your neck that resembles nothing close to a scarf. Magic, really.

2. The bandana If western is your thing, you may just love this method. Going line dancing with the girlfriends? Put your scarf into the original position shown above and then tie both ends behind the triangle. The only thing left to do is to saddle up and go!

3. Tied to the side

This is pretty much the reverse of what you just did above, but instead of tying the loose ends behind the triangle, tie them out front and twist a little to the side. Paris, here you come!

4. The classic pull through
Yes, you can recreate the pull through look that we saw from the blanket scarf! To complete this, open up the entire scarf to make it a square. Now, start rolling the scarf until you have one long roll. Now wrap it around your neck and pull through the one side and look complete!

3. The Infinity Scarf

Last but certainly, the beloved infinity scarf. This is by far the easiest and least complicated scarf to wear as the scarf itself is pretty self-explanatory. Whether it’s a heavy material or nice and lightweight, you can’t go wrong with a good infinity. Here are even more to choose from!

  1. The classic infinity

This is the most common way to wear the infinity scarf. To create this look, just put the scarf around your neck and then loop it once! You can do hard things, this is not one of them 😉

2. Triple looped [snug as a bug]

So you want to be extra snuggled? Easy as one, two, three! Literally. Loop the scarf a third time, throw on your coat and the brisk winds have nothing on your neck.

3. The pull through  Alfani Jersey High-Low Tunic, Created for Macy’s

And last but certainly not least, the same style we’ve shown on every scarf in today’s post – the pull through. I had no idea that you could do this with an infinity scarf, but nothing is impossible so there’s that. To do this, hold the scarf vertically and and bring both sides together. Now wrap it around your neck and pull through one side through the loop!

Phew – and that my friends, is just the beginning. There are so many ways to wear a scarf, the world is literally your oyster. Hopefully today’s post took a little bit of the guesswork out of the scarf equation and will leave you with only one question – which one to wear first? Remember to shop all of the scarves available at Macy’s and use code THANKS for 25% off your order!
