The monochromatic trend isn’t necessarily a new concept around these parts. You see, I’ve been a loyal supporter of the groutfit [grey-outfit] for years. You know the one– old grey sweatpants paired with an even older, slightly different shade of grey hoodie? Groutfit. Finally a trend I’m ahead of the curve on. Whether you’re a monochromatic veteran [like yours truly] or just starting to dip your toes into the trend, today we’re showing you how to [easily] master monochrome with Nordstrom.

It’s no secret Nordstrom holds a special place in my heart. It seems like those little silver packages or [not so little] brown boxes make appearances on my front porch more often than not these days. They’re my go-to one stop shop for just about every occasion [or just because] because treat yo-self, am I right? Plus, with free shipping and free returns, Nordstrom presents the perfect opportunity to try out a few new trends risk-free. Needless to say, all of today’s looks are from Nordstrom which makes it easy to replicate all the monochromatic vibes you’ll see. 

Before we dive in – just a few words on this whole monochromatic trend. My first piece of advice: don’t be afraid to try it. For one reason or another, wearing a top that [almost] perfectly matches your bottoms can be intimidating. Luckily it’s the perfect season to layer, layer, layer. If it feels like too much, you can break up the matching look with a patterned shoe or a pop of a different color in your accessories. Play around with it and have fun! After all, that’s what fashion is supposed to be about!

Olive

First up? Olive. I’ve always been a fan of the earthy, green hues for fall. A great pair of olive utility skinnies + a fun tee [meow] layered with a cozy cardi creates an easy everyday look. The printed tee breaks up the matchy-matchy feel of the outfit but still gives the illusion of the monochrome trend. Of course, no outfit is complete without a pair of basic [and oh-so comfortable] slip on sneakers.

Burgundy

Next on the list is a bold burgundy look perfect for the office. While the boardroom isn’t typically the first place you might try out a new fall fashion trend, this is an easy way to incorporate monochrome into your 9-5. I opted for a fun wide-leg crop [another fun trend worth trying] paired with a basic burgundy sweater. Adding a faux leather jacket takes the 9-5 office look to 5-9 after-office drinks.

Navy

Next up? Navy. I fell head over [navy] heels for this outfit as soon as I put it on my body. If you have a fall wedding or other formal occasion coming up, please [I’m begging you] wear this outfit. There’s just something about a satin skirt that makes a gal feel like a million bucks. I paired it with a navy tank and this blazer to pull the whole look together– easily taking you from workwear to wedding wear.

Warm Neutrals

Last, but most certainly not least, is the rust family. If we’re being honest, I’m not typically drawn to these shades BUT they’re oh-so pretty for fall so I was excited to step out of my colorful comfort zone and give these neutrals a chance. I’m so glad I did because this simple sweater + skinny jean combo ended up being one of my favorite looks from the bunch. Bonus: a little pop of snakeskin brought it all home for me.
